CHARACTER NAME: Arrietty
SERIES: The Secret World of Arrietty
CANON POINT: A couple years after the end of the movie; fully moved in to their new house
LOSS: The ability to hide

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Arrietty is a Borrower; Borrowers have been around for decades, living in the spaces under the floors and between the walls of human homes, and pilfering "borrowing" things from the humans that won't be missed, like sugar cubes, crackers and lost straightpins. The basic personality traits of any Borrower are as follows: clever, sneaky, quiet, and resourceful, with a tasteful dash of respectful paranoia. Shake well and serve warm.

Arrietty herself is a very brave little Borrower, for only being 14 years old (16 at my canon point). When seen by a human being (or 'bean') on her very first borrowing, she doesn't scream, doesn't panic. She stays calm, and retreats carefully. She's the kind of girl to take control when things go wrong, and is a quick thinker to boot, which comes very much in handy. No matter where they live, the Borrower's world is a dangerous one- live in a house, and you risk being found by humans, and who knows how they'll take that. Live outside, and you risk being caught and eaten by larger animals than yourself. (Which... last I checked, most animals are.) The fact that there are still any Borrowers in the world at all is a testament to how hardy and clever these little people are, and Arrietty is no exception. Especially so.

She's also very stubborn and wants to do things her way. She's not bossy; she just does what she thinks is right, even if it's probably not the wisest choice. At the same time, while she's quick to act, this also makes her more than a little reckless. (Thankfully, she knows herself well enough now that she can manage her way out of most situations mostly unscathed.) That's gotten her into a little trouble (namely, going to see Sho to tell him to leave her family alone, which quickly led to a very violent and sudden remodeling of their kitchen, her mother being caught by a bean, and ultimately their departure from the house.)

When it comes to beans-- it's mixed. She's seen the good that lies in some beans, thanks to Sho, but she still has the natural wariness and mistrust of most human beans that all Borrowers share. It doesn't take a whole lot to get her to trust you, but you have to tread lightly in the beginning. It's nothing personal. It's just how she was raised.

And speaking of raisings- she does love her parents, Pod and Homily, very much, and they're a very happy family much of the time, but in some ways, they hold Arrietty back. She's not quite independent, but her personality and outlook concerning beans sets her apart from their traditional Borrower virtues, and that causes its fair share of butting of heads with her parents, especially her father.

But over top of all these traits lies a playful, carefree and spirited nature. Arrietty is naturally a sunny-side-up kind of girl, and no amount of dangerous Borrowing will change that. She's also very giving and sweet, and anyone who makes a friend of Arrietty won't regret it.

ABILITIES: All the mad thing-climbing and stuff-repurposing skillz, yo! She's a Borrower, after all, and she's had a couple years to learn some of her dad's good craftsmanship when it comes to making the little electrical gadgets and whatnot.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: "Just a little more..." Arrietty grumbled to herself as she scaled the large wooden furniture (Father had called it a buffet...?) in the dining room, where the beans here kept a candy dish. The earring hooks she had used since before they left the old house still slipped right through the fabric covering the buffet, like a hot knife through butter, two years later, and she relished the chance to use them. These were among her favorite tools.

As she stashed her hooks back into her sling bag, she looked between the teapot and the sugar bowl, where her quarry lay. She grinned- the young bean had gotten into it earlier, and the young bean always forgets to put the lid back on. That made her work a lot easier. Arrietty scurried across and through the teaset, knowing her time was limited.

There the candy dish lay- still mostly full of delicious, colorful candies, she found once she had clambered up the side and dropped down in. Since she and Father had brought one home one very rare and fruitful night, they had become a sort of treat for Mother. Since her birthday was coming soon, Arrietty wanted to bring a few of these home to surprise her. She was glad she brought her second bag. There wouldn't be room for more than one piece in the one slung over her back.

She pulled the other pack out of her sling bag, and had started slipping a few of the candies into it when she heard a noise across the hall. "Oh, really, David... That boy..." Arrietty grabbed up her things and swept up out of the candy dish, hiding behind the little rack of tea saucers.

It was the young bean's mother.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: here!

INTENT: Well, I'm apping her for a few reasons! One of them being because I want to play someone small with 5, and also because I want to challenge my writing- you know, 'write a story about exploring your house as if you were one inch tall' and all. On rewatching the movie, I found that I see a lot of myself in Arrietty's personality, though, so I know I'm going to enjoy playing her a lot.
